Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) materials are the new alternative to produce molded parts with less use of non-renewable resources. There are many factors that make WPC’s a "greener" plastic.
For game parts, the moldability of plastic has been the characteristic that makes it so popular. Once a mold has been created, it can make the same piece time after time with a consistency that is not attainable by other processes.
The figures here contain 40% or more wood fiber. This decreases the use of resins that are attained from nonrenewable resources by at least 40%. The wood fiber itself is taken from waste wood so there are no plant resources that have to be cultivated in order to produce this fiber.
Because of the wood filler in the resin compound, there is less material that needs to be melted in order to achieve flow during processing. Combine this with faster cycle times and the result is that less energy is needed to turn the WPC pellets into a finished part with injection molding. In fact, energy use can be decreased by up to 35%.
